Autumn Term
Autumn term: September - December

English
Autumn 1 we are going on an adventure with Isabella from The Girl of Ink and Stars as she tries to unravel the mystery of her missing friend. Through the story we will create our own setting description of the busy marketplace, encompassing all the sights and sounds around us. We will then go on to write about our own mythical creature and the setting we find them in whether that be the depths of the sea or high in the mountains.
Autumn 2 we will risk everything to follow Lewis into the 'Christmas Dinner of Souls' where he is forced to spend Christmas eve, facing unbelievable characters. We will create our own grotesque character for the story including fronted adverbials and relative clauses. We will then write our character into their own tense sense with a horrific creature hidden inside a cloche and include dialogue with an existing person at the dinner.

We will then be moving onto Addition and Subtraction (both mental and written methods) after half term. Below are some videos explaining these methods for a little extra help. We will also be investigating area and perimeter throughout the term. Throughout the year children continue to practice and improve their times table knowledge through Daily Ten, Hit the Button and Times Table Rockstars. Children should be accessing Times Table Rockstars at least 30 minutes a week!

Geography Learning Challenge:
What are the main differences between the Amazon Rainforest, the Lake District and Antarctica?
We will be exploring where in the world the Amazon, Lake District and Antarctica is as well as how they differ in climate. We will also look at the physical and human features associated with each location. By the end of the topic, children will have an idea of what it is like to live in each one of these places.

History Learning Challenge:
Why should Gunpowder, Treason and Plot never be forgotten?
We will be exploring what the gunpowder plot was, why it occured and the impact it had on modern life. We will look into the actions of Henry VIII, Elizabeth I and James I and how they led to the plot. We will also debate whether the Great Fire of London was only a disaster or whether it was a chance to be reborn as a society.

This term we will be exploring bridges. We will be looking at the features of different materials that make them better or less suited to bridge building whilst also considering structure as seen in beam, arch and truss bridges. We will experiement with cardboard and spaghetti to investigate the strongest structures. Finally, we will use our woodwork skills to build a bridge and test its strength.

In science we will be looking at revesible and irreversible changes. We will create mixtures and solutions and investigate whether we are able to separate them again back to their original form using sieving, filtering and evaporation. Ask the children what changes are reversible and which are not.
